China, 1960s, The Cultural Revolution: Mao Tse-tung institutes a system whereby peasant farmers are selected to receive training in the field of medicine. Returning to the commune several months later, these underqualified and often literally shoeless farmers are now known as Barefoot Doctors. In this tradition I humbly offer the following quips, musings and anecdotes from my travels as The Barefoot Philosopher.
